Memories (2022) was the first project from Painting 2. The prompt was to choose a personal memory to render on a canvas either at or larger than 5'x5'. I decided to continue my theme of symbols and place them on a Broadway stage. This process was slightly daunting since I have only worked on canvases no larger than 8"x10"; however, I kept pushing myself to just put something on which is advice I hold dearly from my Painting 1 Professor.
After multiple conversations with my Painting 2 professor, Omid Shekari, and many hours staring at what seemed to be a disaster, I kept going. The idea wasn't going to become a reality if I just thought about it; so, keeping my Painting 1 Professor's guidance in mind, I applied paint to canvas. Luckily, those curtains matched the power of the wooden stage; thus, allowing me to continue with the rest of the piece.
The symbols involved in the backdrops include my high school graduation year in 2020, otherwise known as the pandemic; a ballet shoe that represents my fond memories of dance; and the abstracted sea scene in the background which represents seeing the Little Mermaid as the first show I had the privilege to see at when I turned seven.
